-
- ==========================================
-
-
-
-
-
- Doing your income taxes on your favorite spreadsheet using TAX-85 is incred-
-
-
- ibly easy! Merely boot up your spreadsheet program and load the appropriate
-
-
- version of TAX-85 into memory (MP=Multiplan, WKS=Lotus 1-2-3, VC=VisiCalc).
-
-
- If you're using Multiplan, it will save a lot of time if you turn off the
-
-
- recalculation option during the initial entry of figures. If you're using
-
-
- Lotus 1-2-3, specify Range Input by pressing "/RI" and specifying a range of
-
-
- A9..E206, so as to simplify input.
-
-
-
-
-
- Now, one figure at a time, use the "Next Unlocked Cell" key for your particu-
-
-
- lar implementation (this technique cannot be used with VisiCalc -- more on
-
-
- that later) to step to the next entry and enter the appropriate value. When
-
-
- you're all done, you will be returned to the top of the spreadsheet. At this
-
-
- point, you'll probably want the recalculation option on so that you can see
-
-
- the effect of any changes you might make. Since there are some unavoidable
-
-
- circular references in the spreadsheet, you will probably want to select the
-
-
- iteration option (if available) and/or use multiple manual recalculations
-
-
- until all circular references have been resolved.
-
-
-
-
-
- TAX-85 incorporates the following Forms and Schedules:
-
-
- -- Schedule A, Itemized Deductions
-
-
- -- Schedule B, Interest and Dividend Income
-
-
- -- Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business or Profession
-
-
- -- Schedule W, Deduction for a Married Couple When Both Work
-
-
- -- Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
-
-
-
-
-
- If you do not use all of these, it will make no difference. They will merely
-
-
- supply zero values onto your Form 1040. If you use additional Forms and/or
-
-
- Schedules, you can work them out separately and input the appropriate values
-
-
- onto your Form 1040.
-
-
-
-
-
- Now for a few important notes of interest:
-
-
- -- Be advised that the resultant printout is NOT suitable for filing your
-
-
- tax return! You must manually transfer the values from the printout to
-
-
- the appropriate Forms and Schedules.
-
-
- -- The value on Line A25 of Schedule A (these line numbers are for the
-
-
- SCHEDULES, they are not spreadsheet line numbers) is for a "Married,
-
-
- Filing Jointly" return. If you are using something different, you may
-
-
- change this value by first unlocking the cell and then entering the
-
-
- correct value.
-
-
- -- Regardless of whether or not you are actually using Schedule W, you
-
-
- should enter the following values into it: Wages/Salaries/Tips, Employee
-
-
- Business Expenses, IRA Deductions and Keogh Retirement Deductions. The
-
-
- reason for doing this is that Form 1040 draws the values from these
-
-
- cells. If you are not using Schedule W, this will not affect your Form
-
-
- 1040 because it will still enter a zero value for the Married Deduction.
-
-
- -- The Profit or Loss From Business value is entered onto Schedule W as
-
-
- Self-Employment Income under the "YOU" column. This is how MOST people
-
-
- would figure their taxes, but you may always change values by unlocking
-
-
- cells and entering the appropriate values for your return.
-
-
- -- The Exemptions value has a default of TWO. It is VERY EASY (especially
-
-
- with the VisiCalc version) to overlook this figure while preparing your
-
-
- return. Pay particular attention to change this value if need be.
-
-
- -- The value on Line 38 of Form 1040 is from Schedule Y, Married Filing
-
-
- Jointly. If you are using a different Schedule or method, you can change
-
-
- this cell by first unlocking it, and then entering the appropriate value.
-
-
- == IMPORTANT NOTE: If your taxable income is less than $50,000 and you are
-
-
- not using Schedule G (Income Averaging), then you MUST substitute the
-
-
- amount shown in the Tax Tables in place of this value. For tax planning
-
-
- purposes, you may wish to leave the formula in place, as the amounts from
-
-
- the Tax Tables and Schedule Y are very similar in most cases.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- These notes cover all you'll need to know about TAX-85. It should be obvious
-
-
- by now that you can make use of TAX-85 regardless of your particular circum-
-
-
- stances. You need only to unlock and change any cells which need to be
-
-
- altered to fit your particular situation.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Additional Notes for the VisiCalc Version
-
-
- ===========================================
-
-
-
-
-
- -- When you first load TAX85ABC.VC into memory, several cells will display
-
-
- the "ERROR" message. These are NOT errors, but merely the result of the
-
-
- circular references mentioned above. They will be resolved and display
-
-
- the correct values after a few calculations have been performed.
-
-
- -- Due to these same circular references, you should issue at least THREE
-
-
- consecutive calculation commands ("!") to arrive at bonafide figures.
-
-
- VisiCalc does not have an iteration option, so these calculations must be
-
-
- ordered manually.
-
-
- -- VisiCalc also does not allow the "locking" of cells, and this means that
-
-
- EXTREME CAUTION must be exercised by the user not to overwrite cells con-
-
-
- taining formulas. Before entering values, check to see that the cell is
-
-
- defined with a "(V) 0". It may also help to leave the automatic calcula-
-
-
- tion option on, as the intermediate values will be displayed, making it
-
-
- more difficult to accidently overwrite a formula. VisiCalc performs its
-
-
- calculations fast enough that this should not prove to be a hindrance.
-
-
- Additionally, you can disregard the above references to the unlocking of
-
-
- cells -- ANY cells in VisiCalc can be merely overwritten.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Hopefully, you can make your tax preparation much less painful by using one of
-
-
- these templates. Any comments and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
-
-
- While no liability is assumed for the use of these products, any reports of
-
-
- bugs or errors will be acted upon immediately.
-
-
-
-
-
- TAX-85 is distributed in the form of "FreeWare." This means that you are free
-
-
- to use it as you will, and to distribute copies to whomever you wish. However
-
-
- it is hoped that if you can make valuable use of it, you will send $10 (or
-
-
- whatever amount you feel is fitting) to:
-
-
-
-
-
- Jim Anderson
-
-
- 3729 Second Ave. So.
-
-
- Billings, Montana 59101
-
-
-
-
-
- This is the first year that these templates are being distributed under the
-
-
- FreeWare concept. Whether this policy continues in the future depends upon
-
-
- the support shown by you, the user.
-
-
-
-
-
- Thank you very much, and MANY HAPPY RETURNS!
